Women Human Rights Defenders Convene in Dandora to Strengthen Solidarity and Collective Action

Nairobi, Kenya – June 5, 2026

Women human rights defenders (HRDs), community organizers, activists, and social justice champions from Nairobi and Kajiado Counties gathered at the Dandora Community Justice Center for the Social Justice Women’s League Convening 2026, a one-day forum dedicated to reflection, learning, solidarity, and collective action.

Organized by the Social Justice Women’s League in partnership with the Social Justice Centers Working Group, the convening brought together grassroots women leaders committed to advancing human rights, gender justice, and community empowerment. The gathering provided a safe and inclusive space for participants to engage on issues affecting women defenders and the broader social justice movement.

Throughout the day, participants took part in discussions and interactive sessions focusing on women’s wellness and mental health, the welfare and security of women human rights defenders, economic empowerment, leadership development, and the current social, economic, and political realities facing communities across the country.

Speakers and participants highlighted the growing challenges confronting women, including gender-based violence, economic hardships, and restrictions on civic space. The discussions emphasized the importance of collective organizing, community solidarity, and women-led advocacy in addressing these challenges and advancing social transformation.

The convening also served as a platform for networking and movement-building, enabling women defenders from different communities to share experiences, learn from one another, and strengthen support systems. Participants reaffirmed their commitment to defending human rights, promoting gender equality, and amplifying the voices of women at the grassroots level.

As the event concluded, attendees expressed a renewed determination to continue organizing, educating, and mobilizing their communities in pursuit of justice, dignity, and inclusion. The convening reinforced the belief that when women organize and lead, communities become stronger and more resilient.

The Social Justice Women’s League remains committed to creating spaces that empower women defenders and strengthen their role in shaping a more just and equitable society.
