Solidarity statement condemning attacks on Senator Okiya Omtatah

We, the Social Justice Centers Working Group, strongly condemn the ongoing attacks and threats directed at Senator Okiya Omtatah, a distinguished human rights defender and tireless advocate for the rights of Kenyan citizens. His steadfast commitment to challenging harmful government policies through lawful channels deserves unequivocal support and protection.

It is clear that these threats are intended to intimidate Senator Omtatah and derail his efforts to inform the public about policies that undermine their wellbeing. His persistent pursuit of justice on behalf of Kenyans highlights the essential role of whistleblowing and the right to seek legal redress without fear of retaliation.

Whistleblowing is a vital pillar of accountability and transparency in any democratic society. Those who expose wrongdoing must be protected, not punished.

The Constitution of Kenya guarantees fundamental rights, including freedom of expression, access to information, and the right to seek remedies through the courts. Senator Omtatah’s actions fall squarely within these constitutional protections, and any attempts to silence his advocacy strike at the heart of democratic principles.

The troubling silence from government officials regarding these threats raises serious questions about their commitment to safeguarding lives and ending patterns of extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances. It also signals a broader effort to suppress dissenting voices in the country.

We urge the international community, including the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, to take note of the growing dangers faced by whistleblowers in Kenya and to advocate for their protection.

We stand in full solidarity with Senator Okiya Omtatah and encourage him to remain resolute in the face of intimidation. We will continue to support his pursuit of justice and accountability.

We further demand that the Kenyan government take immediate steps to guarantee Senator Omtatah’s safety and accept full responsibility should any harm come to him. Protecting human rights defenders is a fundamental measure of a government’s dedication to democracy and the rule of law.
