SOLIDARITY STATEMENT CONDEMNING ATTACKS ON SENATOR OKIYA OMTATAH

We, the social Justice Centers Working Group, vehemently condemn the frequent attacks and threats targeting Senator Okiya Omtatah, a seasoned human rights defender and advocate for the rights of Kenyan citizens. Senator Omtatah’s unwavering commitment to championing human rights and challenging regressive government policies through legal avenues deserves our utmost support and protection.

It is evident that these attacks are aimed at silencing Senator Omtatah and obstructing his efforts to raise public awareness about detrimental government policies. His relentless pursuit of legal remedies on behalf of Kenyans underscores the importance of whistleblowing and the right to seek redress through lawful means without fear of reprisal.

Whistleblowing is not a crime; rather, it is an essential mechanism for accountability and transparency in governance. Those who expose wrongdoing should be shielded from victimization and retaliation.

The Kenyan constitution enshrines fundamental rights, including freedom of speech, access to information, and recourse to the courts when aggrieved by government actions. Senator Omtatah’s activities are well within his constitutional rights, and any attempts to suppress his advocacy undermine the very principles of democracy.

The conspicuous silence of government officials in the face of these threats raises doubts about their commitment to safeguarding lives and ending extrajudicial executions and enforced disappearances. There appears to be a broader scheme to stifle dissent and silence opposition voices in Kenya.

We call upon the international community, including organizations such as the OHCHR (Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights), to take cognizance of the plight of whistleblowers in Kenya and advocate for their protection.

We extend unwavering solidarity to Senator Okiya Omtatah and urge him not to succumb to fear or intimidation, as we stand firmly behind him in his pursuit of justice and accountability.

Furthermore, we demand that the Kenyan government prioritize Senator Omtatah’s security and hold itself accountable for any harm that may befall him. Safeguarding the lives and freedoms of human rights defenders is a critical indicator of a government’s commitment to upholding democracy and the rule of law.

In unity and solidarity,

The Social Justice Centers Working Group
