Nairobi Chapter of the Social Justice Movement Concludes Two-Day Convention in Machakos

The Nairobi Chapter of the Social Justice Movement yesterday concluded a two-day convention held in Machakos County, bringing together organizers and representatives from various justice centers to reflect on their work and strengthen strategies for community engagement.

During the convention, participants discussed a range of internal matters, including the day-to-day organizing efforts that sustain grassroots justice work across different communities. The leadership acknowledged the significant contributions made by justice centers in documenting and referring cases of human rights violations. Particular recognition was given to their efforts in addressing gender-based violence (GBV) and exposing cases of police abuse of power, which continue to affect many communities.

Members also reflected on the broader role of the Social Justice Movement in safeguarding the Constitution and protecting Kenya’s democratic space. The leadership urged members to remain vigilant, especially as the country gradually moves closer to the next election period. They warned that election seasons often come with an increased risk of human rights violations, making community monitoring and documentation even more critical.

Internally, the convention provided an opportunity to celebrate the growth of the movement. Participants welcomed and recognized the new justice centers that have recently joined the network. The meeting also reviewed the movement’s charter and strategic plan to ensure that its structures and priorities remain responsive to emerging social and political challenges.

The Nairobi Chapter further expressed solidarity with the Social Justice Centers Working Group Western Chapter in their campaign against the proposed establishment of a nuclear plant in Siaya County, emphasizing the importance of community consultation and environmental justice.
