Halima Bakari Elected Secretary of The Social Justice Centers Working Group
The Social Justice Movement has elected Halima Bakari as its new Secretary, ushering in a new chapter of grassroots leadership, community organising and the continued struggle for social justice.
Bakari, a human-rights defender and community organiser from Al Qamar Social Justice Centre, has been deeply involved in grassroots activism and community mobilisation. Her work has included confronting gender-based violence, police brutality, child neglect and other violations affecting communities at the margins.
Her journey within the social justice movement reflects the very spirit upon which Social Justice Centres were built: communities organising themselves, documenting injustice, demanding accountability and refusing to remain silent in the face of oppression.
As Secretary, Bakari joins the leadership of a movement whose strength lies in its grassroots foundation and whose work spans human rights, access to justice, economic and social rights, gender justice and the defence of communities against systemic injustice.

Her election is also a recognition of the critical role played by women human-rights defenders in Kenya’s social justice movement. Bakari has previously spoken about the resistance women activists face when they step into public spaces to demand accountability and has continued to raise her voice despite those challenges.
From the streets and communities to movement-building spaces, her activism has been rooted in a simple but powerful principle: justice must be organised from below.
The Social Justice Movement now looks to her leadership to strengthen coordination, deepen solidarity among Social Justice Centres, amplify community voices and help build a more organised, resilient and accountable grassroots movement.
Her election is not merely a change of office. It is a continuation of a struggle.
Congratulations, Comrade Halima Bakari, on your election as Secretary of the Social Justice Movement.
May your tenure be defined by courage, principled leadership, collective organising, feminist solidarity, grassroots power and an unwavering commitment to justice.
The struggle continues.
Organise. Educate. Liberate. ✊🏿
The Social Justice Movement to the world, congratulations to Cde Halima Bakari
