From Awareness to Action: Local Communities Unites Against Human Trafficking

On Thursday, The Social Justice Centers in partnership with Justice Ventures International, held a powerful community dialogue on Human Trafficking in Kibra that brought together victims and survivors of human trafficking, human rights defenders, grassroots activists, and members of the community. The dialogue served as an important platform for truth-telling, awareness creation, and collective reflection on one of the most urgent human rights crises affecting vulnerable communities today.

The meeting was graced by Jeff Pankratz, the President of Justice Ventures International, whose presence underscored the importance of international solidarity in the fight against human trafficking. His engagement with community members, survivors, and local human rights defenders highlighted the need for collaborative action between global organizations and grassroots communities in addressing exploitation, abuse, and modern-day slavery.

Human trafficking continues to thrive in silence, fueled by poverty, unemployment, inequality, gender-based violence, displacement, and lack of awareness. Many young people, especially women and children from marginalized communities, are lured by false promises of jobs, education, or better opportunities, only to find themselves trapped in exploitative situations ranging from forced labor to sexual exploitation and domestic servitude. The dialogue in Kibra created a safe and open environment where survivors courageously shared their lived experiences, shedding light on the harsh realities and long-lasting trauma caused by trafficking networks.

The testimonies shared during the meeting were both painful and inspiring. Survivors spoke about manipulation, coercion, psychological abuse, and the difficulties they faced in seeking justice and rebuilding their lives. Yet despite these challenges, their resilience and determination to speak out demonstrated the importance of survivor-centered advocacy. Their voices reminded everyone present that the fight against human trafficking must prioritize dignity, healing, justice, and empowerment for survivors.

Human rights defenders and community leaders who attended the dialogue emphasized the need for stronger community awareness, preventive education, and local protection mechanisms. Participants discussed how traffickers often take advantage of desperation and economic hardship, making it necessary for communities to remain vigilant and informed. There were also calls for increased government accountability, stronger law enforcement action against trafficking syndicates, and improved support systems for survivors, including psychosocial care, legal aid, shelter, and economic empowerment programs.

One of the key outcomes of the dialogue was the recognition that combating human trafficking requires a united, community-driven approach. Religious leaders, youth groups, civil society organizations, local authorities, and ordinary citizens all have a role to play in identifying risks, reporting suspicious activities, and supporting survivors without stigma or discrimination. The meeting reinforced the idea that silence and indifference only create more space for exploitation to continue.

As the dialogue concluded, participants reaffirmed their commitment to continue raising awareness and strengthening grassroots action against human trafficking in Kibra and beyond. The partnership with Justice Ventures International marked an important step in building stronger networks of solidarity and resistance against human exploitation. Together, through education, advocacy, survivor support, and community mobilization, it is possible to challenge trafficking systems and protect the dignity and rights of vulnerable people.
