The Social Justice Centres have resumed their community dialogues for the third quarter of the year, strengthening efforts to take human rights education and awareness directly to communities.

Through the Kamukunji Human Rights Defenders and Umoja Social Justice Centre, the dialogues provide safe spaces where community members can discuss emerging human rights concerns, share experiences and learn how to prevent and respond to violations.

At Umoja Social Justice Centre, the latest dialogue focused on Youth Digital Literacy, Online Safety and Intersectional Feminism: Combating Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence (TFGBV) under the theme, “Sauti Salama: Empowering Mowlem Youths through Digital Literacy, Feminist Leadership and Safe Online Spaces.”

The session recognized the growing threat of online violence, which continues to affect individuals’ mental wellbeing, dignity, relationships and daily lives. Participants were sensitized on TFGBV, ways of preventing online abuse, digital safety and practical measures young people can take to protect themselves and others in digital spaces.

The Centre emphasized that what may appear to be a minor online incident to one person can have serious and lasting consequences for another. Building digital literacy is therefore an important part of protecting human rights in an increasingly digital society.

The community outreach also coincided with the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, when human rights monitors from Kamukunji conducted door-to-door awareness campaigns. The monitors engaged residents on human rights, the dangers of enforced disappearance and the importance of reporting and documenting violations.

These activities demonstrate the importance of community-based human rights education. By taking conversations on human rights directly to residents, the Social Justice Centres are strengthening community knowledge, empowering citizens and building a culture where violations are challenged rather than normalized.

As the third quarter community dialogues continue, the Kamukunji Network remains committed to ensuring that human rights awareness reaches every household and that communities are empowered to defend their rights and demand accountability.

The community dialogues are sponsored by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Kenya, and implemented by HAKI Africa in collaboration with the Social Justice Movement. The partnership supports community-led human rights awareness, enabling Social Justice Centres to engage residents directly on emerging human rights concerns, strengthen grassroots protection mechanisms and promote accountability at the community level.
