The Social Justice Centres Working Group, through its HAKI Mashinani Project, recently convened a program review meeting in partnership with Kituo Cha Sheria and Justice Ventures International to assess progress and strengthen community-driven justice efforts.
A key focus of the project is addressing the alarming rate of human trafficking in Kenya. Participants noted that through community awareness campaigns and grassroots mobilization, the initiative has played a critical role in exposing trafficking networks and empowering vulnerable populations with information to protect themselves. By working directly within communities, the program has helped shift the narrative from silence and fear to vigilance and collective action.
Another major milestone highlighted during the review is the expansion of access to justice. Through collaboration with Kituo Cha Sheria, the project has connected local communities with pro bono lawyers, ensuring that victims of injusticeβespecially those affected by trafficking, exploitation, and abuseβcan seek legal redress without the burden of cost. Legal aid clinics and community paralegal support systems have strengthened trust in justice processes and increased case reporting.
Equally important is the projectβs commitment to the mental wellbeing of human rights defenders. Recognizing the emotional and psychological toll of frontline activism, the initiative has integrated counseling support through trained counsellors. This support system has provided safe spaces for defenders to process trauma, manage stress, and sustain their advocacy work without burnout.

Despite these achievements, the review acknowledged ongoing challenges, including limited resources, threats to activists, and the complexity of dismantling trafficking networks. Stakeholders emphasized the need for sustained investment, stronger protection frameworks, and deeper collaboration across sectors.
The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment to scale up interventions, strengthen partnerships, and continue centering community voices. The HAKI Mashinani Project remains a powerful example of how localized, people-driven approaches can confront systemic injustices while restoring dignity, access to justice, and hope at the grassroots level.
