Dagoretti, Nairobi
The Social Justice Movement, in partnership with Justice ventures International and Kituo Cha Sheria, held a community dialogue in Dagoretti to strengthen public awareness and collective action against human trafficking and exploitation.
The engagement brought the issue closer to the community, creating an opportunity to discuss the realities of human trafficking, how it differs from migration, and the various forms of exploitation that threaten the safety, dignity, and rights of vulnerable people.
Participants explored how human trafficking can manifest within Dagoretti and other communities, including emerging forms of exploitation that often go unnoticed. The discussions emphasised the importance of community vigilance and the need to recognise situations in which individuals may be deceived, coerced, or exploited for another person’s benefit.
A key focus of the dialogue was identifying the warning signs and indicators of trafficking. By improving public understanding, the initiative sought to empower community members to recognise potential cases early and respond responsibly.
The engagement also highlighted safe reporting mechanisms, referral channels, and available protection and support services. Participants were encouraged to understand the importance of reporting suspected cases through appropriate channels while prioritising the safety, privacy, and dignity of potential survivors.
Human trafficking remains a serious human rights concern that requires more than law enforcement interventions. Effective prevention also depends on informed communities, accessible support services, and collective responsibility. Poverty, vulnerability, misinformation, and limited awareness can increase people’s exposure to exploitation, making grassroots education an essential part of the response.
Through this community dialogue, the Social Justice Movement and its partners reaffirmed the importance of empowering communities to identify risks, support survivors, and contribute to the prevention of human trafficking.
The initiative reflected the broader commitment of grassroots social justice actors to advancing human dignity, protecting vulnerable populations, and ensuring that survivors can access appropriate assistance without stigma or discrimination.
The fight against human trafficking begins with awareness, is strengthened by solidarity, and requires collective action to ensure that no one is left vulnerable to exploitation.
