SOCIAL JUSTICE CENTERS WORKING GROUP AND HAART KENYA JOIN FORCES TO COMBAT HUMAN TRAFFICKING
The fight against human trafficking requires more than laws and policies; it requires informed, vigilant and empowered communities. Recognising this, the Social Justice Centers Working Group, in partnership with HAART Kenya, has brought together community leaders and Social Justice Centres based in Dagoretti and Dandora to strengthen community awareness, prevention and response to human trafficking, child trafficking and human smuggling.
Through the Chaplains of Hope Social Justice Centre in Dagoretti and the Dandora Community Justice Centre (DCJC) in Dandora, community members and stakeholders have participated in engagements aimed at shining a light on the often-hidden realities of trafficking and exploitation.
In Dandora, the community dialogue held at the Dandora Community Centre provided an opportunity for residents to understand what human trafficking is, the factors that increase vulnerability, and how to recognise potential signs of exploitation. The discussions also examined the important distinction between human trafficking and human smuggling—with trafficking primarily involving exploitation, while smuggling generally involves facilitating the illegal movement of people across borders.
The engagement further emphasised the importance of safe migration, including verifying recruitment agencies and agents, safeguarding personal documents, being cautious about seemingly attractive employment opportunities, and reporting suspected cases of trafficking.
Meanwhile, the Chaplains of Hope Social Justice Centre in Dagoretti participated in a human trafficking training alongside various stakeholders committed to protecting vulnerable communities and combating trafficking in persons. The training explored prevention, identification of victims and survivors, referral pathways, community awareness, and the need for coordinated action among different actors.
These engagements underscore a simple but powerful reality: community awareness can save lives.
Traffickers often exploit vulnerability, lack of information, poverty and the desperate search for employment or better opportunities. By equipping communities with the right information, we strengthen their ability to identify risks, protect children and other vulnerable persons, challenge exploitation, and seek assistance before harm occurs.
The partnership between SJCWG and HAART Kenya demonstrates the power of community-based approaches in confronting human trafficking. From Dagoretti to Dandora, Social Justice Centres are becoming important spaces for awareness, prevention, referral and collective action.
The fight against trafficking cannot be left to institutions alone. It belongs to all of us—families, community leaders, young people, civil society organisations, government agencies and every individual who believes that no person should be bought, sold, exploited or treated as a commodity.
Together, we can build communities where people are informed, children are protected, exploitation is challenged, and survivors receive the justice, dignity and support they deserve.
