Western Chapter:
From a Single Spark to a Regional Movement
The story of the Western Chapter is one of rapid, grassroots expansion. What began as a single center in 2006 has evolved into a powerful network of 35+ Social Justice Centres (SJCs) and over 300 dedicated comrades across the former Nyanza region.
Our Journey of Growth
2006: The journey begins with the establishment of NYAHURIADEN (Nyando Human Rights Development Network), our pioneer center.
2018 – 2019: Expansion picks up speed with the founding of Magharibi CJC and the Kondele centers.
Today: We have a presence in Kisumu (11 SJCs), Migori (5 SJCs), Kakamega, Vihiga, Homa Bay, and Siaya, with projections for even greater growth.
Governance & Accountability
As we grew, we recognized the need for structure. In 2020, we initiated a constitutional process to ensure every center operates with integrity. Despite the challenges of aligning diverse voices, the Chapter Constitution was officially adopted at the Great Lakes Hotel, paving the way for our first democratic elections.
The Steering Committee (Elected July 2021)
Chapter Convener: Comrade Collins Kodhek
Chapter Secretary: Comrade Halima Nyota
Chapter Finance Officer: Comrade Samson Onditi
Representatives: Faith Akumu Ouko & Godfrey Ambenge
Impact & Achievements
The Western Chapter isn’t just growing in numbers; we are growing in influence. Our members are now key actors in local and national justice systems.
Policy & Justice: We hold seats on Court Users Committees (CUCs) and Ward Climate Change Committees.
Gender Justice: We’ve established Gender Desks in our centers to strengthen GBV reporting and support survivors.
Advocacy: From Haki Mtaani to election monitoring and fighting police brutality, our centers are the first line of defense for human rights.
Digital Presence: Increased social media visibility ensures the world sees the work being done on the ground.
The Road Ahead: Overcoming Challenges
Growth brings new hurdles. We are actively working to address:
Digital Infrastructure: Building a robust membership database and securing sensitive data.
Political Education: Mentoring the next generation of “young cadres” in social movement history.
Sustainability: Strengthening our Domestic Resource Mobilization to ensure our offices remain open and effective.
“We aren’t just a collection of centers; we are a unified front for the nationalization of the Social Justice Movement.”
