Social Justice Movement Condemns State of Affairs in Kenya Following Devastating Floods

The Social Justice Movement is deeply saddened by the devastating impact of the ongoing floods in Kenya. Our hearts go out to the families who have lost loved ones, and we extend our sincere condolences during this difficult time.

We stand in solidarity with all those displaced by the floods, who face immense challenges and uncertainty. It is imperative that their immediate needs are addressed, and we call on authorities to prioritize the safety and well-being of affected communities.

The failure of the meteorological department to issue timely warnings is deeply concerning. Last year, both national and county governments allocated substantial funds to mitigate potential flooding from El Niño, yet these resources appear to have gone unaccounted for. We demand accountability and urge swift action to ensure those responsible are held to account.

The prolonged and heavy rains reflect the growing impact of climate change, making it essential for the government to adapt disaster management and response strategies accordingly. Until recently, there has been a notable absence of a coordinated evacuation plan and rapid response teams, leaving ordinary citizens—without the necessary expertise or equipment—to conduct search and rescue operations. Where were the professionals and medical personnel tasked with providing assistance?

The lack of a coordinated national response is unacceptable. Kenyans deserve transparency and accountability from their leaders, particularly during crises. The government must assume full responsibility for lapses in warning and mitigation, and ensure victims receive dignified burials and essential support. While floods are natural events, the continued loss of life highlights systemic failures in disaster management at both county and national levels.

We also condemn religious institutions that have refused to provide shelter to affected victims in Mathare 4A and other areas. We call on the private sector to demonstrate compassion and humanity during this crisis rather than prioritizing profit over people.

We commend the Kenya Red Cross for its tireless efforts in providing relief and support to flood-affected communities. Their dedication to humanitarian principles serves as an example to us all.

The Social Justice Movement pledges to remain in solidarity with the victims of these floods and will continue to monitor the situation closely. We demand answers from the government and will advocate relentlessly until justice is delivered and the needs of all affected communities are met.
