“The Article 43 Committee” of the Social Justice Movement criticizes the Government’s position on the Ever Rising Cost Of Living
Barely a week since President William Ruto gave the state of the nation address in parliament praising the strides his government had made in their first year in office; the social justice movement seems to have a contrary opinion.
Yesterday on 16/11/2023, the article 43 committee of Social Justice Movement took their advocacy to various social media platforms under the Hash tags #NjaaRevolution and #FoodSovereigntyNow where they harshly differed with the president’s position on the cost of living.
The Social Justice Movement argued that the true state of the nation should be reflected by the state of the people of Kenya citing that the living conditions and the harsh economic realities facing majority of the Kenyans should be the parameter that Kenyans must use to judge whether their government has delivered.
The grassroots activist faulted the government on policies that were exploiting small scale producers and putting them out of the production cycle rather than protecting them.
Actors in the GBV sector within the network also warned that the rising cost of living has also lead to a steady rise in domestic violence and gender based violence resulting to a strain in GBV shelters.
The movement further demanded that the government should come up with practical and realistic policies to mitigate the looming crisis faulting the current social protection program as unrealistic and inconsiderate of the majority of the population.
The activist threatens to take to the streets should government fail to meet their demands.
