Advocacy for Human Rights: Social Justice Centers Working Group (SJCWG) and IDinsight Join Forces to Drive Data-Driven Campaigns

Today, the Social Justice Centers Working Group (SJCWG), in partnership with IDinsight, convened a conceptual meeting focused on enhancing their approach to data management for informed and impactful campaigns. The collaboration aims to address critical issues such as gender-based violence (GBV) and police brutality by developing robust systems for data collection, storage, and security. These systems are intended to support evidence-based advocacy, ensuring campaigns are well-informed and grounded in verifiable format.

IDinsight, a global advisory and data analytics organization, plays a pivotal role in this partnership. The organization specializes in leveraging data-driven tools, such as randomized evaluations and machine learning, to maximize social impact. With a presence in Nairobi, IDinsight is well-positioned to collaborate with local movements like SJCWG to address governance and social equity challenges. Their work often involves creating decision-focused evaluations and monitoring systems, which align with the Social Justice Centers’ needs to document and analyze incidents of police brutality and other human rights violations effectively.

The SJCWG has long been at the forefront of expanding Kenya’s human rights civic space, addressing systemic issues through grassroots activism and advocacy. By documenting cases of police violence and organizing campaigns around GBV, the SJM seeks to amplify marginalized voices and push for institutional accountability. However, the challenge has often been the lack of a centralized, secure database to collect and analyze incidents, which can hinder efforts to present cohesive, actionable evidence.

The meeting underscored the importance of integrating technology and rigorous data methodologies into advocacy efforts. This includes creating secure platforms to store sensitive information and developing protocols to protect victims’ confidentiality. The proposed partnership aims to streamline the documentation process, allowing SJCWG to conduct campaigns that are not only emotionally compelling but also backed by robust evidence.

Through this collaboration, the Social Justice Centers aim to strengthen their advocacy on pressing issues such as GBV and police brutality, contributing to broader efforts to promote transparency, accountability, and justice. This partnership reflects a growing recognition of the power of data in driving systemic change and addressing the root causes of human rights abuses. By aligning their grassroots activism with IDinsight’s data expertise, the group is poised to make a significant impact on Kenya’s human rights landscape.
