A TRANSFORMATIVE RETREAT: EMPOWERING SOCIAL JUSTICE LEADERS FOR ACTION
The national leadership of Social Justice Centers has just concluded a productive two-day retreat in Naivasha. The retreat was focused on strengthening the movement’s capacity and reflecting on the pressing social issues facing the country.
The first part of the retreat concentrated on capacity building, where the leadership was introduced to monitoring and evaluation processes. Participants were equipped with vital tools and techniques to ensure that their work is effectively tracked and evaluated for impact. Additionally, they were taken through both the Community-Based Organizations (CBO) Act and the Public Benefit Organizations (PBO) Act, analyzing the pros and cons of each. This discussion allowed the team to assess how these legal frameworks will affect their ongoing work at the local level.
The second half of the retreat provided an opportunity to reflect on the state of the nation, particularly the recent Gen Z protests and the government’s retaliatory violence. Conversations also focused on the rampant corruption and the escalating cost of living, both of which are affecting millions of citizens.
The retreat concluded with detailed planning for a national symposium, scheduled for October, which will bring together various stakeholders in the human rights field. The event aims to showcase ongoing work and explore avenues for new partnerships.
The Social Justice Movement delegation was led by National Convener Wilfred Olal, while the HAKI Africa delegation was headed by CEO Yusuf.
